The History
of ITF
Taekwon-Do
From the resilience of a sickly young student of calligraphy to a global discipline of peace and technical perfection.

General Choi Hong Hi
Founder of Taekwon-Do (1918–2002)
Before he was a General, he was a sickly young student of calligraphy, whose frail health drove him to study martial arts to strengthen his body and spirit.
He eventually led the 19 pioneer black belt holders in a mission to spread Taekwon-Do across the globe, establishing the foundation of our modern practice.
The Birth of Taekwon-Do
On April 11th, a special board officially adopted the name "Taekwon-Do". General Choi developed the fundamental techniques while serving in the ROK Army.
Far East Tour
The first international demonstration of Taekwon-Do took place as the founder and his team toured the Far East, showcasing the art's power beyond Korean borders.
Introduction to USA
General Choi introduced Taekwon-Do to the United States while visiting the Jhoon Rhee Institute in Texas, planting the seeds for Western expansion.
Malaysia & SE Asia
Taekwon-Do was officially introduced to Malaysia and Southeast Asia, leading to the formation of the first national associations outside of Korea.
Ambassadorial Goodwill Mission
A government-sponsored mission led by General Choi visited West Germany, Italy, Turkey, United Arab Republic, Malaysia, and Singapore to spread the art.
Formation of the ITF
The International Taekwon-Do Federation was established in Seoul with nine founding nations including Vietnam, Malaysia, USA, and West Germany.
Move to Canada
To preserve the ITF's independence from political interference, the headquarters were relocated to Toronto, Canada.
Move to Vienna
The ITF headquarters moved to Vienna, Austria, positioning the organization in a neutral, central location to better serve its global membership.
Legacy of the Founder
Upon the passing of General Choi, the ITF continued to uphold his technical and moral standards through the transition of leadership.
Current Leadership
Under the current leadership of Prof. Ri Yong Son, the ITF continues to thrive as the global authority on authentic Taekwon-Do.
The Eternal Legacy
"Gen. Choi Hong Hi... dedicated his all... till the last moment... All Taekwon-Do students owe a debt"
We honor the life of the founder who transformed a personal journey of health into a universal path of enlightenment. UTAK remains committed to this authentic lineage.
Philosophy & Values
Technical Purity
The ITF system is based on Newton's physics, focusing on the "Sine Wave" motion to maximize power through body mass and speed.
Moral Culture
Taekwon-Do is not just a sport; it is a way of life. The 5 tenets (Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, Indomitable Spirit) are its foundation.
The UTAK Mission
To preserve the authentic teachings of General Choi Hong Hi in Kerala, ensuring every student understands the rich history and technical depth of ITF Taekwon-Do as preserved by the 19 pioneers.
